The Forest Theater Opens
Karl Hoblitzelle opens the Forest Theater as a neighborhood movie house and gathering place serving South Dallas’ Jewish community. Designed as a state-of-the-art theater for its time, the Forest quickly becomes part of the social and cultural fabric of the neighborhood.
A Community in Transition
As the demographics of South Dallas change, so does the Forest Theater. The theater begins serving the neighborhood’s growing Black community, becoming a cultural anchor and a place for Friday night movies, children’s matinees and community connection.
The Central Forest Club Era
The Forest Theater evolves from a traditional movie theater into a destination for live entertainment and nightlife. As the Central Forest Club, the venue welcomes legendary performers including Wilson Pickett, B.B. King and Redd Foxx, adding another chapter to its place in Dallas music and entertainment history.
The Black Forest Theater
South Dallas native Erykah Badu helps reintroduce the historic venue as the Black Forest Theater, bringing a new generation of artists and audiences through its doors. Prince, Jill Scott and Dave Chappelle are among the artists who perform at the Forest during this era.
The Theater Goes Dark
The Black Forest Theater closes. After decades as a movie house, nightclub and performance venue, the building goes dark. But the Forest remains part of the cultural memory of South Dallas.
A New Vision Takes Shape
The Forest Theater is placed in the hands of the organization that would become Forest Forward, beginning a new effort centered on restoring the historic theater while using it as an anchor for broader investment and opportunity in South Dallas.
Groundbreaking
On April 4, Forest Forward breaks ground on the restoration and expansion of the Forest Theater. After years of planning, fundraising and community engagement, construction begins, moving the vision for the Forest from possibility to reality.
The Grand Return
On November 1, the Forest Theater opens its doors again. The restored and expanded Forest brings together performance, film, arts education, entrepreneurship and community under one roof, creating new spaces for artists, students, families and the next generation of South Dallas. That evening, the Forest’s iconic tower and marquee light the South Dallas sky again for the first time in more than 50 years.
